Description
Baroque Revival blanket chest (also called a cassone or marriage chest), likely dating from the late 19th century (approximately 1870-1900).
The key identifying features include:
Heavily carved figural elements, particularly the classical figures (putti or cherubs) flanking the central escutcheon
The combination of dark carved wood with burled wood panels (those golden-brown decorative panels)
Elaborate gadrooning and egg-and-dart molding along the borders
The shield or cartouche design in the center panel
The substantial carved base with scrollwork
The overall rectangular shape with a hinged lid typical of blanket or dowry chests
This style was particularly popular during the Victorian era when revival styles were fashionable. Furniture makers drew inspiration from Italian Renaissance and Baroque designs, creating ornate pieces that displayed wealth and craftsmanship. Such chests were often prestigious items in upper-middle-class and wealthy households.
MEASURES 62" X 21" X 25"H. PLEASE NOTE THIS ITEM IS BEING SOLD AS IS. THERE IS SOME MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE FEET, SEE PHOTOGRAPHS.
