Description
U.S. Silver Certificate, which is a type of dollar bill that was once redeemable for physical silver. This appears to be a Series of 1899 $1 Silver Certificate, identifiable by its design and the portraits it features. The front (first image) shows: The distinctive large eagle design at the center Two portrait medallions at the bottom, with what appears to be Abraham Lincoln on the left and Ulysses S. Grant on the right Serial number R63963117A Text indicating it is a "SILVER CERTIFICATE" and "ONE SILVER DOLLAR" Signatures of Treasury officials The back (second image) shows: A decorative green design Large "ONE" denominations on both sides "SILVER CERTIFICATE" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" text Ornate border patterns Silver Certificates were issued by the U.S. government between 1878 and 1964, and were backed by silver stored in the U.S. Treasury. They were phased out in the 1960s when the Treasury stopped redeeming paper currency for silver.
