EASTON RESIDENT LIFETIME COIN COLLECTION AUCTION
Description
12 Rolls of Assorted 1960's Pennies.he 1960s were a significant period for U.S. pennies, particularly regarding their composition:
Pre-1962: Pennies were 95% copper, 5% zinc/tin
1962-1982: Copper prices rose significantly, leading to speculation and hoarding
1964-1968: The mint removed mint marks to discourage collecting during coin shortages
1965: The Coinage Act of 1965 was passed in response to silver hoarding, though it primarily affected silver coins
1967-1968: Despite rising copper prices, penny composition remained unchanged while silver coins switched to copper-nickel
The rolls in the image, dating from 1965-1968, are from this turbulent period when the government was actively managing coin shortages and composition changes. Each roll contains 50 pennies, worth 50 cents, and they're housed in standard bank wrappers from two prominent manufacturers of the era: Abbott Coin Counter Co. and Standard-Johnson Co.
These rolls could potentially contain valuable varieties like the 1960 Small Date penny or the 1969-S doubled die, making unopened rolls from this period particularly interesting to collectors.
