Description
A $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle gold coin from 1885. The images show both the obverse (front) and reverse (back) of the coin in what appears to be protective plastic casing. The obverse features the Liberty Head design with a classical female profile wearing a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY" and surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The date 1885 is clearly visible at the bottom. The reverse shows the American eagle design with spread wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" around the rim and "FIVE D." at the bottom. The eagle's shield displays the national arms, and there's a banner above with the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The coin appears with nice detail preservation and a warm golden color typical of these 90% gold coins. The Liberty Head Half Eagle was minted from 1839 to 1908, designed by Christian Gobrecht, and these coins contained 0.24187 ounces of pure gold. This 1885 issue would have been minted at one of the U.S. Mint facilities operating at that time.
