EASTON RESIDENT LIFETIME COIN COLLECTION AUCTION
Description
A 1912 Indian Head Quarter Eagle ($2.50 gold coin). The obverse features a Native American chief in a feathered headdress surrounded by stars, with the date 1912 below. The reverse shows a standing eagle with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "2 1/2 DOLLARS."
The coin shows nice detail in the headdress feathers and the eagle's features. The gold has a warm, natural color typical of U.S. gold coins from this era.
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and was minted from 1908 to 1929. It's notable for its unique incused (sunken) design where the features are struck into the surface rather than raised above it. This was quite innovative for U.S. coinage at the time.
